It's a good choice for families who find themselves needing three rows of seats on a daily basis. Even when fully loaded with people, there's space left over for large amounts of gear. where the yukon xl really comes into its own, however, is when heavy-duty towing is needed. A standard yukon xl 2wd 1500 model is rated to tow trailers of up to 8,400 pounds. A yukon xl 2500, the heavy-duty model, is rated to pull a 12,000-pound trailer. This makes the yukon xl an excellent choice for families with boats or horses. though identical in many respects, there are differences between the suburban and the yukon xl. Styling cues distinguish the gmc from the chevrolet. revisions for 2003 brought improved brakes, smarter airbags, a modernized electrical system, and improved interior features. For 2004, the yukon xl is better and safer still. It comes with a tire-pressure monitor and a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front-seat passenger. The heavy-duty 2500 2wd 39,460) and 2500 4wd 42,160) are rated to pull trailers up to 12,000 pounds. A 6. 0-liter v8 comes standard on denali and 2500 models. An 8. 1-liter v8 850) is optional for 2500 models, and delivers 440 pounds-feet of torque for maximum towing capability. Denali is distinguished by unique exterior design cues. walkaroundthe gmc yukon xl is a long-wheelbase version of the yukon, just as the suburban is a long-wheelbase version of the chevy tahoe. Xl means extra long: yukon xl is based on the same platform as the yukon, but it's stretched 14 inches in wheelbase and about 20 inches overall. While the yukon can carry a lot of people or a lot of cargo, the yukon xl can do both at the same time. Gmc takes a more sophisticated, more understated approach to design than chevrolet. Still, the yukon xl shares the unmistakable profile of the 'burb. denali trades the standard yukon xl's black grille for a bright mask of fine-metal mesh, but then swaps the base model's chrome bumpers for body-color bumpers, keeping the overall flash level about equal. Round fog lights are neatly tunneled into the lower part of denali's unique front bumper. The liftgate comes standard and features a glass section that opens independently. Cargo doors work better for work vehicles as they open wide and allow a closer working position to the vehicle's storage area. Cargo doors are also useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. The hinges can be released, allowing the doors to open fully when loading large items. Most people find the liftgate preferable, however. They are the leaders when it comes to seating and cargo capacity (discounting the ford excursion, which is being discontinued). Big inside, the yukon xl is very roomy and, for the most part, comfortable. the exception is the seats. Gm's bucket seats are big and cushy, but i don't always find them comfortable. The seat bottoms lack support, especially on the sides, and the seat bottoms don't seem long enough. Owners often disagree with this assessment, however. Bucket seats are standard on slt and denali models an optional on the sle. The standard front seat setup in yukon xl is a three-passenger, manually reclining 40/20/40 split bench with dual manual lumbar support and six-way power for the driver. They are similar in terms of comfort. Yukon xl comes standard with nice custom cloth upholstery. The optional ultrasoft leather makes this big truck look and feel like a luxury vehicle. the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the console lid features a nice rubber-lined indention, handy for sunglasses and other items. It would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off. ergonomics are otherwise excellent. The cup holders are superb, a good feature for people who live and work in their vehicles. Above are well-designed map lights that can be aimed. A covered power outlet is conveniently located for cell phones and radar detectors, in addition to the cigar lighter inside the ashtray compartment. the driver information center was redesigned last year, and is now located immediately in front of the driver, below the speedometer. It's handy and easy to use, allowing the driver to program automatic locking and other features, as well as providing trip mileage, fuel economy and other data. Turn those features off, turn them on, or deploy them partially. Everything is programmable. audio and climate control systems are well designed and easy to operate. The heating and air conditioning systems were redesigned for 2003 to deliver faster warm-ups and cool-downs than before. The manual heating controls that come on the base model (sle) are nicely designed and work well. Much better, however, are the digital three-zone climate controls that come on the other models. They are sophisticated yet easy to operate, and permit separate adjustments for driver and passenger. The rear heating/air conditioning controls are mounted overhead and help improve comfort for pets as well as people. a new tire-pressure monitoring system added for 2004 continuously checks inflation pressures and flashes a warning on the instrument cluster should any tire lose air pressure. When size large is just right. introductionthe chevrolet tahoe is america's best-selling full-size suv. One of the reasons is that it seems to be exactly the right size suv for a lot of americans. It's big enough to haul busloads of people and boatloads of cargo, yet it's more manageable than the super-size suburban. tahoe carries more cargo than a compact or mid-size suv such as the chevy trailblazer or ford explorer. It can carry five passengers and their gear at the same time. Third-row seats are available to increase the capacity to seven passengers, or up to nine when equipped with bench seats throughout. The tahoe makes for a stable towing platform and pulling a trailer is no problem with the optional 5. 3-liter v8. Yet the tahoe is far more maneuverable than a suburban, important in crowded parking lots, underground garages, or when parallel parking, and it will fit into more garages. on the road, the tahoe is smooth and stable, a rock. It has plenty of power and its brakes work well. The cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional, particularly after improvements that were made for 2003. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. In any kind of driving, it's a great choice for someone who needs real carrying capacity. improvements to the tahoe for 2004 further enhance its safety. New hydroboost brakes provide power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor is now standard. New options include electronic traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. A major upgrade was made to the tahoe for 2003 for increased safety and reliability: gm's stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available, enhancing comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. The brakes were improved. tahoe dazzles its passengers with entertainment possibilities. Xm satellite radio delivers cd-quality music, radio, sports, and other programming coast to coast. A rear dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones keeps the kids busy. lineupchevy tahoe is available in ls and lt trim, plus there's a z71 off-road package. Two v8 engines are available, the vortec 4800 and the vortec 5300. More important is the difference in torque: the 4800 develops 295 pounds-feet of torque, vs. 330 pounds-feet for the 5300, both at 4000 rpm. Tahoe ls is available with 4wd 37,000). The 5. 3-liter v8 is optional 700). It is essentially a shortened version of the chevy suburban and shares much in common with it. the tahoe is the same width as the suburban. The tahoe is more than 22 inches shorter than the suburban and nearly 9 inches shorter than the ford expedition. The tahoe is nearly 11 inches shorter than the stretched, midsize chevy trailblazer ext (and about 5 inches longer than the standard trailblazer), but the tahoe is 4 inches wider than the trailblazer ext. big outside mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. The mirrors on lt and z71 models feature puddle lamps that light up the perimeter. Press a button and they fold in for parking in narrow places. Heating elements keep off frost and ice. The left mirror automatically dims to reduce headlamp glare. Choosing between them is a matter of lifestyle and personal preference. On the ls, cargo doors are standard, and the hatch a $250 option. On the lt, the hatch is standard. Cargo doors are more convenient when towing and for other truck chores, and they make it easier to control a dog. The traditional hatch is made of aluminum for light weight; being able to open just the glass is often more convenient when loading groceries or outdoor gear, especially since it can be operated with the keyless remote. New seats, a new center console, a new instrument panel, new hvac controls, and refinement throughout resulted in an improved environment for driver and passengers. there's plenty of headroom and legroom in the tahoe. The front seats are big, wide and, in the lt, fully adjustable. Optional seat heaters are easy to turn on and adjust. Switchgear is nicely designed and easy to operate. The map lights can be aimed. Rubber lined cubbies on the center console offer places to organize odds and ends. The ashtray can be removed to reveal another nice cubby for sunglasses and stuff. Cup holders are well designed. Three power outlets in front and one in back deliver electricity for accessories. Visibility is very good through big windows, but we'd like the option of an electronic park-assist feature to help maneuver this big rig in tight quarters. we appreciated the available power-adjustable pedals. Pressing a button moves the brake and accelerator pedals for an optimum driving position. This allows a shorter driver to move farther from the steering wheel where the airbag is located. The tilt steering could use finer adjustments, but by adjusting the height and tilt of the seat it's possible for drivers of all sizes to find a comfortable position. Steering wheel-mounted controls add convenience and enable the driver to personalize functions. we love the lt's electronically controlled, automatic three-zone hvac system for its sophistication and ease of use. Change the driver's temperature, for example, and a panel displays the new temperature for a few moments, then display's the passenger's temperature, then displays the driver's temperature again. It's easy to operate the controls with the big knobs and a clear led display that's easy to understand. Rear electronic temperature controls improve comfort for second- and third-row passengers and pets. the standard setup is a manual-control hvac system with three zones that allows temperature differentials of 30 degrees between driver and passenger. It also works quite well. The third zone allows manual control of the rear air conditioning. Second-row bucket seats (.
